Chapter 2: Who are the people at the Bank?

One day in the land of Frontenac, Penny, Buck and Bill went to the bank to open a savings account. Penny's mom came along too. When they got there, they were greeted by a nice woman in a blue suit.

"Good morning and welcome to Frontenac Bank," said the woman "How can I help you?"

"We'd like to open a savings account!" said Penny.

The woman in the suit took the children and Penny's mom over to a desk and some chairs where everyone could sit down.

"My name is Maureen," said the woman. "I'm a personal banker and I can help you open a new account. I'd like to ask you a few questions to find out what kind of savings account is right for you." The woman sat down behind the desk asked each of the children and Penny's mom some questions about why they wanted to open a savings account and what they planned to do with their savings.

"I think our FrontenacKids Club Account would be the best account for you," said Maureen when she was finished with the questions. Next she asked them for some more information, like their addresses and phone numbers. Then, she handed each of the children a small green book. Each of the books had a colorful sticker that said 'FrontenacKids Club.' "This is your savings account," said Maureen. It has your name on it and your savings account number. When you want to make a deposit, just bring this information with you."

"What's a deposit?" asked Buck

"A deposit is when you put money into your account," said Maureen. "Money you deposit is added to your account. When you make five deposits into your FrontenacKids Club Savings Account, you'll get to choose a free gift."

"Ooo. That's sounds great!" said Penny. "What if I want to take money out?"

"When you take money out of your account, it's called withdrawal. "Money you withdraw is subtracted from your account."

"How do I know how much money is in my account?" asked Bill. "The amount of money in your account is called your balance," said Maureen. "Your monthly statement will show you what your balance is and help you keep a record of all your deposits and withdrawals."

"Who do I give my money to?" asked Penny.

"When you come to the bank to make a deposit or a withdrawal, you give the money and your account information to a teller," said Maureen. "The teller will record how much money you deposit or withdrawal and give you your new balance. How much would you like to deposit into your account today?"

Penny, Buck and Bill each had a different amount of money to deposit. Can you help them count their money? Add up the amount of money for each deposit.
